Small civilian drones have been spotted in
the skies over the French capital for a second night in a row, police said on
Wednesday, once again flying over the US embassy and several iconic Paris
landmarks.
At least five drones were
spotted over central Paris by both witnesses and police, sources told French
media.
The tiny aircraft were seen near the US embassy, the
Invalides military museum, the Eiffel Tower, the French Senate and several
major thoroughfares leading into and out of the French capital.
Police had already been investigating who was behind some
five separate drone flights over the same areas of Paris the previous night.
France has some of the world’s most advanced legislation regulating
the use of civilian drones. French prosecutors have opened an investigation
into the flights, which took place over “prohibited zones”, the AFP news agency
reported.
French consumers can purchase drones from specialty
stores for recreational use. The drones can be flown without a permit in
airspace under 500 feet but not over populated areas, airfields and a handful
of sensitive areas, like military buildings and nuclear sites.
The latest incidents come after a series of civilian
drone flyovers at French nuclear plants in
October and, in January, over the Elysée
presidential palace.
The fresh sightings also come at a time of
heightened security in Paris following last month's jihadist attacks that left
17 people dead.
